On a clear day, you can see all the wayto the Palos Verdes Peninsula and beyond. Free guided tours ofthe ranch house are available on Thursdays & Fridays from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m., every hour on the hour, and on Saturdays & Sundays from10 a.m. Justnorth of the visitor's center, you'll find Will Rogers' rustic ranch-stylehome, where you can see how Rogers lived and entertained his movie starfriends. Actually, there are two houses, both of them large, white, wood-framebuildings with shingled roofs and a verandah-style wooden front porcheswhich look out over a sweeping green lawn.

This park was Rogers' ranchand home from 1924 until his death in 1935, where he lived with his wifeBetty and their three children, Will, Jr., Mary, and James. Thelargest wing of the house contains only a single large room downstairs, decorated with the unmistakably eccentric touch of the cowboy humorist. This living room is a cavernous space, its barn-like rafters adorned withanimal hides and Indian blankets. The home preserves Rogers' original furnitureand mementos, from the informal, hammock-like couches to a wooden cigar-storeIndian. The colorful furnishings include a handsome dining room table,a massive set of bull horns over the stone fireplace, large oil portraitsof Rogers & his wife, and an old, hand-cranked "hurdy gurdy "machine which plays loud honky-tonk tunes. Stoney River is an upscale steakhouse, specializing in hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood selections, signature salads and house specialties.

Whether relaxing at the bar or dining in the comfortable atmosphere, our mission is to provide the highest quality food in a polished environment, delivered by professional servers with a sense of genuine hospitality. Nestled on 10 acres of meticulously lush gardens in the stunning Watchung Mountains, Stone House is a picturesque backdrop for your next celebration. Our two distinct event spaces are where luxury meets rustic and contemporary.

When he moved on tothe stage with the Ziegfeld Follies, he started telling folksy, homespunstories to fill out his rope act (and cover up when a rope trick didn'tquite work the way he wanted). He went on to become first a major Broadwaystar, then a silent movie star, and eventually, the most popular radiopersonality of his time. His witty, common sense observations about life& politics earned him the adulation of the masses.

Ironically, actor Glenn Ford("The Blackboard Jungle") worked here as a stable hand, cleaning out these stables. The wing to the north is amore traditional home, with a library, another stone fireplace, and severalrooms upstairs. Among the many colorful knickknacksfilling the room is a small stuffed calf (on wheels), used by Will Rogersto practice his roping tricks. Afterdriving up a rather steep little side road, you park your car near theVisitor's Center, where you can tour a small museum with exhibits aboutthe cowboy-comic (containing busts, photos, a scale model of his home,etc.).

All in all, the Will Rogersestate is a wonderful, tranquil, rustic bit of our Hollywood past tuckedaway just a few minutes from the rush of the big city. The main trail is a reasonablyshort, wide horse path made of soft earth and fallen leaves, framed byrows of sweet-smelling eucalyptus trees. It leads gradually up around awinding hill to the north of the Rogers house, the views below improvingwith each step.
